History On the fateful night of 5-6 December 1705, when Anandpur was evacuated, he was one of those who safely crossed the torrential Sirsa rivulet. At the head of a flanking guard watching pursuers from the direction of Ropar, he had an encounter with a body of irregulars near Malikpur Ranghran in which he was seriously wounded. He was carried , near death, to Nihang Khan's house at Kotla Nihang Khan by Sahibzada Ajit Singh and Bhai Madan Singh.Guru Gobind Singh ji asked Nihang Khan to look after Bachittar Singh, after which he proceeded with the remaining forty or so Sikhs towards Chamkaur. Guru Gobind Singh ji, before his departure, bestowed upon Nihang Khan; a sword, a dagger and a shield. Later, someone informed the police that sikhs are putting up in the mansion of Chaudhry Nihang Khan. His daughter Mumtaz was looking after wounded Baba Bachitter Singh. When policemen asked who was inside, Chaudhry Nihang Khan said that his daughter and son-in-law are putting up there. He offered to open the door. Jafar Ali said that there was no need for that and he left the mansion. Bibi Mumtaz had heard what her father had said. She pledged that right from that moment Baba Bachitter Singh (who was rather on death-bed) was her husband. She vowed never to marry at Bassi Pathanan. Despite the advice of her parents she stood upon her decision. Thus, Baba Bachitter Singh's name remains enshined in the Sikh History forever as a great warrior and martyr. Bachittar Singh's wounds proved to be fatal. He succumbed to his injuries and breathed his last on 8 December 1705.Nihang Khan had the cremation performed secretly the following night.
